RIHANNASinger

Rihanna was born Robyn Rihanna Fenty on February 20, 1988 to a Barbadian father and a Guyanese mother in St. Michael, Barbados.

Rihanna: They (her parents) are so excited, so proud of me, and very supportive. My mom [and] all my family is from Guyana. Only up to my generation and down was born in Barbados, but everybody above me is Guyanese. I only moved here (US?) a week after I got my deal. So I was still living in Barbados after I met Jay-Z.

EON SINCLAIRMusician

Eon Sinclair (born 1981) is the bassist for Canadian indie rock group Bedouin Soundclash. He met the band’s guitarist/vocalist Jay Malinowski while they were both attending Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. He previously attended Pickering High School in Ajax, Ontario.
Both of Sinclair’s parents are Guyanese. The song Gyasi Went Home is about one of Sinclair’s visit to Guyana. The accompanying video for the song was also shot in Guyana.
The Caribbean influence on this band is evident in a variety of this songs done by Bedouin Soundclash.

DAVE BAKSH – Musician
Dave Nizaam Baksh (born 26 July 1980) is the former lead guitarist in the Canadian punk rock band Sum 41. He is currently recruiting members for his band Brown Brigade. He was born in Toronto (Ajax), Ontario (Canada).

Baksh was born to West Indian-Canadian immigrants from Guyana. He is married to Jenn (Janice) Baksh and enjoys bands such as Metallica, Led Zeppelin,The Eagles, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Yngwie Malmsteen.

Baksh joined Sum 41 as the third member, after Deryck Whibley and Steve Jocz formed the band in the summer of 1996. He is the band’s main musical driving force. In addition to being the lead guitarist, Baksh also provides back up-vocals. On May 11, 2006, Baksh announced in a statement through his management company that he was leaving Sum 41 for personal reasons.

EDDY GRANTMusician

Eddy Grant born (born Edmond Montague Grant on 5 March 1948), is a Plaisance, Guyanese musician. When he was still a young boy, his parents emigrated to the UK, where he settled. He had his first Number One hit in 1968, when he was the lead guitarist and main songwriter of the multiracial group, The Equals. It was his self-penned song, “Baby Come Back” that flew to the chart summit. The tune also later topped the UK singles chart again when covered by Pato Banton.Grant is also well known for the chart topping, “Electric Avenue” hit from the 1980’s. “Electric Avenue” was both a UK and U.S. number 2 in 1983, selling over a million copies. Plus, a later remix of the song was a UK Top Ten hit again in 2001.

DR. WALTER RODNEYHistorian / Activist

Dr. Walter Rodney (March 23, 1942 – June 13, 1980) was a prominent Guyanese historian and political figure.Born to a working class family, Rodney was a bright student, attending Queen’s College in Guyana and then attending university on a scholarship at the University of the West Indies in Jamaica, graduating in 1963. He travelled widely and became very well known around the world as an activist and scholar.His most influential book was How Europe Underdeveloped Africa , published in 1972. In it he attempted to portray an Africa which had been consciously exploited by Europeanimperialists, leading directly to the modern underdevelopment of most of the continent.Rodney died in a car bomb assassination in 1980 while running for office in Guyanese elections. He was survived by his wife and three children.

SEAN PATRICK THOMAS – Actor

Sean Patrick Thomas (born December 17, 1970) is an American actor. He is perhaps best known for his starring role in the 2001 film, Save the Last Dance.Thomas was born in Wilmington, Delaware to Carlton Thomas (an engineer for DuPont) and Cheryl (a financial analyst who also worked for DuPont), both of whom immigrated from Guyana. Thomas, who has two younger siblings, graduated from Brandywine High School in Delaware and attended the University of Virginia. He originally intended to study Law, but upon unsuccessfully auditoning for a role in the film A Raisin in the Sun, Thomas changed directions and decided to get his Masters in Drama from New York University.He has also appeared in supporting roles in the films Barbershop and Halloween: Resurrection, both of which were released in 2002.Thomas was a cast member on The District, a television crime drama that aired on CBS from 2000 to 2004.

SHAKIRA BAKSH CAINE –
Model/Miss World/Miss Guyana Finalist

Shakira, Lady Micklewhite (born Shakira Baksh23 February 1947), is a British model also known as on Shakira Caine.Caine was born in in British Guyana. Inspired by her mother’s dressmaking talents, she aspired to become a fashion designer. However, she began to work in an office as a secretary for the Skladanek brothers, which is where her boss urged her to enter the Miss Guyana contest.Shakira won the Miss Guyana title, and ended up in third place for the Miss World contest in London at the age of 19. From here she launched a modelling career.Actor Michael Caine fell in love with the exotic beauty after seeing her on a TV commercial. He set out to find her, initially thinking she was from Brazil. Michael and Shakira were married on 2 January 1973, and they have a daughter, Natasha.
